Meet Mariamma. She is a brickmaker from southern India. One day she and her family decided to take a small loan from a brickmaker in another town so that they could relocate their family at his brick factory in hopes of earning more money. That man and his sons made them indentured servants, only permitting them to buy food from him and paying them what he pleased, therefore ensuring that they could never make a profit. Not only was the loan that they had borrowed not getting smaller, it was getting bigger.

Imagine this: You get up early, as you do every morning, to get chores done around the house, get the kids ready for school, and you go your separate directions as your 15 year old daughter makes sure the young ones make it to school. About 11:00 your daughter shows up at your work in tears. She has been raped by two young men for hours and beaten brutally. After caring for her essential needs you call the police.

What Makes Someone A Bible “Scholar?”

Since Martin Luther and the printing press thrust the Bible into the hands of every Christian, it has become increasingly difficult to recognize a Bible scholar. Scholarship is not the only important way of understanding the Bible; hearing the Word preached in the worship of the assembly is the most important and preaching is only rarely scholarship. But there are times when the issues raised by the Bible are too important or too complicated to not pay attention to scholarly opinion.

An “Affirmative Action” Proposal For The Free Churches

I have heard from many women ministers over the last couple months. Overwhelmingly, the message is this: “Even though I’m in a denomination that ordains women, no one will hire me.” I am beginning to wonder if we don’t need an affirmative action program for the church.

The Bible Says Women Should Lead – Part 2 (1 Corinthians)

I think St. Paul would be appalled by such an interpretation and that significant scholarly evidence would support this conclusion.
